Some rescue stories are hard to understand. Callie’s is one of them.
Callie’s journey
Callie, a Labrador mix, came to Red Waggin’ Rescue after being abandoned alongside her mother and siblings. When they were found, their legs had been tied together.
And yet, somehow, Callie remained affectionate and trusting. She was a sweet dog who still wanted to love and be loved.
Red Waggin’ took Callie in and made sure she received the veterinary care and support she needed. She went into a foster home, where she had a safe place to begin adjusting to life in a home again.
But Callie was energetic, and she was having some trouble with potty training. Her foster family worked with her, but it became clear that she could benefit from some additional training and structure.
That’s when Callie’s journey took an unexpected turn.
A different kind of training program
Callie was placed with the Ridge Dog Training Program, where incarcerated individuals work with rescue dogs to help them learn the skills they need to succeed in a home.
For Callie, it was an opportunity to work on her training, build confidence, and learn how to channel all that energy in a positive way.
For the people training her, the experience offered something too: connection, responsibility, purpose, and the chance to make a difference in the life of an animal.
Over several months, Callie worked with her trainers and continued to grow.
Then it was time for the next chapter.
Finding her way home
After completing her training, Callie went to another foster home while Red Waggin’ continued looking for the right match for her.
Eventually, that match came along.
Callie found her forever family and got the happy ending she had been waiting for.
Her story is a reminder that sometimes a second chance takes more than simply opening the door to a foster home. It can take veterinary care, patience, training, a supportive community, and people willing to keep showing up for an animal until the right home comes along.
Callie had already been through more than any dog should have to experience. But through the people who stepped in along the way, she got the chance to become the happy, loved dog she was always meant to be.
That’s what rescue is about. One animal, one second chance, one forever home at a time.
